94 civic beating a high performance mustang car. The overall expense in getting this car is a fifth of the mustang. It has one of the best handling among all the cars currently in the market.
This is a great video of a civic beating a mustang. This shows that given a proper engine you can beat a car with more cylinders and packing more power.
I got a 94 civic a few months back after searching the craigslist in my area. I made it into my project car and also wanted to keep it as a daily driver if possible. For this I did not do major tuning but stuck with the stock parts. Still I have seen some real good action with my 94 civic. The point is that you do not need to buy a $40000-$50000 sports car to get an adrenalin rush. I have rode with some of my friends who have these very expensive sports car and still they know very little about cars or how they function. I bought this car for $2500 and did tuning of around $4000 mostly with the help of my friends and myself spending lot many weekends on the car. The end result has been a very exciting car which I know inside out and gives me good performance on track.
I did not want to rice up my 94 civic with a body kit and all such things. I went with a b16a engine which is by far the most easily available engine. Besides this I went for tuning of my brakes, suspension, intake and exhaust valve and changing the tires. This gave me a cool high 14's in the drag race of a quarter mile. I intend to go for further modding next summer when I will go for turbo.
The following info might help you in getting either a tuned up performance car or a daily driver car which will reliably take you from point A to Point B:
1. Searching: You can search for a 94 civic on following sites: craigslist, ebay motors, autos.aol, autotrader, carmax. Once you know that the asking price is ok and the mileage on the car is not very high you can go to the next part, Inspection.
2. Inspection: This is the most important part of any purchase and you should probably get a friend who might know a bit about cars to go with you. The inspection would include checking the parts of the car like car body, car engine, transmission fluid, interiors and basic electronic parts. Once this is done and you do not find any sign of major accident, flooding, or damage you can go for the test drive.
3. Test Drive: This includes testing all the function including clutch, brakes, CV joints and seeing if the handling of the car is OK.
4. Negotiation: Most of the sellers mark up the price by a couple of hundred dollars to allow room for negotiation. If you do not negotiate properly that is like leaving the money on the table. Ideally allow him to give a price to you and before going look at the KELLY BLUE BOOK(KBB) website where you can come to know the approximate price of the car. If the price quoted is much higher than the price shown by kbb it would normally mean that you are being duped. You can either ask him to lower the price or move to another buyer.
5. Paperwork: After deciding final price you need to take care of proper paperwork. This includes things like smog test, get the “bill of sale” signed, pay sales tax and get the insurance activated.
6. Modding/tuning: If you are purchasing a 94 civic specially for a project car you would need to keep away special budget for modding. If you are doing all the modding yourself you would need to know good amount of stuff regarding various parts and how they act together.
I would advice to at least give a couple of weeks to these forums to know inside out about the things involved in modding: Honda-tech, Hondaswap, Torquecars.
