Sometimes it becomes a bit of a problem deciding whether to go for a used car or a new car. There are many factors that come into play. Cost of the car, long term maintenance, reliability, fuel efficiency, overall exterior appeal, model you want to go for and several other. A very strong reason to go for used cars is that within 3 years of the sale the car is worth only about 60 to 70%. In fact as soon as the car leaves a dealership the vehicle would have lost around $2000-$3000 of its actual value. Again as for the reliability it is never 100% guaranteed that your new car will be more reliable than the used car. I have a 94 civic which is many times more reliable than the new SUV I purchased a few years back. I had to make the civic as my daily driver in order to get out of the vicious circle of maintaining and repairing of my SUV.
A benefit of a used car is that if there were any minor defects they would have been repaired within the first few years when the warranty was there. Another great advantage for a used vehicle is that you would be able to put more tech stuff and a few more bells and whistles than you could have done if you had gone with a new car because of the cash you saved.
However besides all of these there are also some basic problems you might face when going for a used car. You might still never be sure about the quality of the vehicle even after you take your test drive. There might be problems which might surface later like automatic transmission etc. You might have to spend a bit more on warranty if you take it because of the age of the vehicle.
However if proper research is done it is possible to get a used car within your budget which would still be ride worthy for the next few years and would be giving you fewer problems than your other new cars.
