Your old car can have a very high number on the odometer. You probably are looking to get more space in your driveway or just want to sell it off as you no longer drive it. However before selling a car in this price range you should note a few things. The first is that trying to sell such a car at a dealership would get you next to nothing. Also you need to know the basic negotiating tips for a used car. You also have to look at how much time you want to spend selling the car.

These steps will help you sell the car:
1. Deciding on what to repair: There is a general rule that if the repair cost is up to half of the asking price of the car you should sell it as a 'parts car'. However if you think the cost of repairs is less than half the price of the car and you can shoulder the cost you can go with the repairs. Also you can offer the vehicle history report which you can get from carfax showing that you are selling the car in good faith.

2. Allow for some wiggle room: There will always be some negotiation after the basic testing of the car has been done. You should allow yourself some wiggle room so while negotiating you can negotiate properly. Ex:- I had to sell one of my cars recently. I wanted around $1800 from it. I set the price at $2400 and was able to get a final price of $2100.

3. Deciding where to advertise: You would not want to spend a lot while advertising the car. You can start with craigslist as it is free. Another great place is ebay motors and lemonfree. If you do not get good response you can move over to the paid advertising in your local areas or few other paid source on internet like autotrader.

4. Creating effective ad: Try to mention all the details of the car and any major problem. This way you will get very select buyers who would be really interested in the car. Always figure out what your time is worth. If you show lesser details and have to show the car to eight guys before getting a deal is it better than giving greater details and having a deal by showing the car to 1,2 or 3 guys. Even though you might make a couple of hundred more in the earlier scene still you would wind up spending better part of next few weekends selling the car and might also lead to lot of frustration.

5. Always get payment in cash: In this price range it is always good to get a payment in cash to prevent yourself from bad checks or other scams.

getting what to repair is the most difficult decision as one also has to take into consideration the total time one has to spend over it and the money you have to put it compared to the payoff of all that trouble.

i would add another source to advertise. the college board in your locality. with the current huge amount of students preparing to get in college there is a huge demand for used cars.
