For a price range of $11,000-$17,000 you would be able to get a car in a good condition which is 3 to 4 years old. These cars would have been sold from new car dealership and it would be good if there is a single owner certificate and service from the same dealership. You can get such a car from a private owner or a used car dealer. These cars can work trouble free for many more years given a good buying condition.

For a price range of $5,000-$10,000 you can find a car which is 5 to 9 years old. You might have to compare a few more models before you come up with a final choice. Normally you might find these cars from a independent used car dealer. Again be sure to check these cars thoroughly because many of the times you might be looking at a lower quality vehicle which has been cleaned up just for sale and might have a good number of issues under the hood.

For a price range of $1,000-$3,000 you can find a car which is older than 10 years. These cars can be purchased as a substitute car in case your daily driver needs maintenance or for people looking to get a car which can get them from point A to point B. You would need a lot more research to find a perfect vehicle. Ideally you should go with more reliable models like Civic, Corolla etc which have a bit more reliable mileage than other cars. These cars are great for people looking for a car which is easy on their pocket however you need to do good amount of research and good inspection of the car before final purchase is made. You would not find these cars with used car dealers as it would be a very low margin sale for them. It is best to get it from a private party: a friend of a friend or a relative you might know who does not want that car sitting in front of their driveway or want to go a bit upscale. You can also check it on the many website however be sure to spend some hours looking for the perfect vehicle.

I think the ideal range is between the 5k to 10k point. this is where you can get very well maintained used cars which have lots of miles left in them and overall will give a nice ride. unless a bit cash strapped than you can go for the reliable models only with a lower price range.
