According to recent statistics given by Insurance Information Institute a car is stolen in America every 25 seconds. Generally people think that only newer cars would be more enticing for thieves instead of old model cars. However in reality old cars also end up getting stolen a lot mostly for their parts which might not be produced now by the manufacturer and would be in high demand.
Here are the tips to prevent you from car thieves:

1.Use pager for notifying that alarm is activated: People have got used to cars giving out false alarms and hence it might not give you the required benefit. Instead of this you should use an alarm which would notify you if the alarm is activated.

2.Keep valuable out of sight: This is one of the most important things. Keeping expensive jewelery or clothes visible can be a major motivation for car theft. You should make sure to place them in the trunk or take them with you. Also hide the removable face plate in the stereo.

3.Using starter disable switch: Instead of going only with locking the steering wheel it is better to go for a starter disable switch and placing it in a place where only you can get to it.

4.Go with professional car alarm installer: Instead of going to some big retail chain to install your alarm it is always better to go with a professional car alarm installer. These guys know much better ways to keep your car off the hands of thieves than a general retail chain employee. If not possible try to find a friend who might have better knowledge about it or look up on internet forums. You can get loads of information from there.

5.Use hood lock: Using a hood lock is a very good option as it keeps the battery and the car alarm mechanism out of the reach of the car thief.

6. Never leave keys in ignition: Car theft is a crime of opportunity. Never leave your car keys in ignition even if you are going for doing some small errand like returning the video or going in the ATM.

7.Keep personal information safe: Keep the registration and insurance information with yourself and do not leave the personal information in the car.

8.Parking lot tips: If possible park only in parking lot which have security personnel. Park the car near the entrance or any place where there is high foot traffic instead of parking in the far off corner of the parking lot.

9.Don't leave duplicate keys in the car: Do not leave spare keys in your car. Thieves know all the hiding places in the car and are quite good at finding these keys.

10.VIN etching: A car thief can look at the VIN which is etched on the major parts of the car and can get the manufacturer to get a replacement key if possible. See to it that it is not easily available.

No car alarm or theft protection is fool proof. What you always try to do is raise the bar for the other guy to get to your car. Most of the car thefts are crime of opportunity and by not giving them easy opportunity you can keep your beloved car with yourself for many years to come.
