1. New car dealers: These dealerships generally have schemes like one owner trade-ins and lease return where they check the maintenance records and you can generally get vehicles with a very high chance that are in good shape overall and will give you a nice ride. However it is not 100% guarantee that you won't get lemon and you should still inspect the car very carefully.

2. Independent used car dealers: At these dealership you will find cars which are much more cheaper however there will be higher chances that you will not get a good car. They might also have a very high chance that the odometer would be rolled back.

3. Private owner: They sell the cars much cheaper and are a lot more flexible on price. Depending on their personal needs they might be selling the car and hence if you are able to find a person who is selling a car with full maintenance records and is also the original owner you might be able to get a good car. However you should be aware that most of them are sold with "as is" tag meaning that there are no guarantees of any kind once you pay the cash.

4. Buying from an auction: You should NEVER buy from an auction unless you have very good knowledge about cars or you can get some guy who knows about them to these auctions. Generally only those cars are sold which are otherwise difficult to sell. They are sold "as is" and hence no guarantees. There might be serious maintenance issues with most of them.

5. Used Rental car: If you want a one-two year old vehicle you can directly get them from car rental company. There might still be some warranty left on the vehicle. Although there might still be good chance that the car might be involved in some kind of accident or be very poorly maintained. If you go for used rental cars go for reputed brands like Hertz, Enterprise etc. check vehicle's maintenance records and without fail get the vehicle inspected by your mechanic.

One of my friends wanted a used car after the car he was using got flooded and he did not want to end up in another costly cycle of debt-insurance-warranties-maintenance. in the end he looked for something like a week through craigslist and some other sites and went with a used accord. this was 6 months back and i have never seen him happier. no loan, minimum maintenance, only spends on gas as and when he needs it.
