There are many factors which govern the vehicle you should go for. If you are with a tight budget and going for a used car and looking for a daily driver it would be best to go for some reliable fuel efficient car like Civic or Corolla. If you live in a place where ice is common on the road you might like to go with ABS.

For a price range of $11,000-$17,000 you would be able to get a car in a good condition which is 3 to 4 years old. These cars would have been sold from new car dealership and it would be good if there is a single owner certificate and service from the same dealership. You can get such a car from a private owner or a used car dealer.

1. New car dealers: These dealerships generally have schemes like one owner trade-ins and lease return where they check the maintenance records and you can generally get vehicles with a very high chance that are in good shape overall and will give you a nice ride. However it is not 100% guarantee that you won't get lemon and you should still inspect the car very carefully.

Sometimes it becomes a bit of a problem deciding whether to go for a used car or a new car. There are many factors that come into play. Cost of the car, long term maintenance, reliability, fuel efficiency, overall exterior appeal, model you want to go for and several other. A very strong reason to go for used cars is that within 3 years of the sale the car is worth only about 60 to 70%.

I got my 91 civic while I was on my first job. That was 8 years back. Back then I wanted a reliable car which would be easy on my pocket and not give me huge maintenance headache as I had seen many of friends have those issues a lot. I did not have enough funds to go for a new car. Hence this car seemed the best choice.
